The Fishing

The New Zealand fishing season runs between 1st of October and the 31st of May. A fishing licence is required for all trout fishing in New Zealand waters

Rivers in the south, such as the Mataura, Oreti , Aparima, Waiau, Borland and Mararoa are world renowned as they offer unsurpassed sight fishing for both brown and rainbow trout.

Lakes in the south such as Mavora and Monowai also offer trout fishing of the same high standard. Lake Mavora was a location used in the filming of Lord of the Rings.

Southland has numerous other rivers and streams that are not so well known but offer exceptional fishing.

Dry fly, nymph and wet fly fishing are all successful methods.

Catch and release is encouraged.
